Philly-area brewers had their best ever showing at the Great American Beer Festival last weekend. Several well-known standards, including Victory Prima Pils, Troegs Troegenator, Sly Fox Pikeland Pils & Stoudt’s Weizen were among the winners. Even more notable: The region ruled lagers. Jeff Roberts, the guru of American artisan cheese, will be town at several events next week. I’ll be writing about him and the astounding variety of cheese being produced in the Philadelphia area for next Thursday’s Daily News food section. Today, I’m headed up to the Hendricks Farms in Telford to chat with the owners. If you aren’t already aware of it, there’s nothing that goes better with gouda, cheddar, blue, etc., than a nice pint of beer. Check out Jeff (a former Philly guy, by the way) and these events:
Wednesday, Oct. 24 - Victory Brewing.  610-873-0881. Five-course meal with a fresh Victory craft beer with each course.
Thursday, Oct. 25 - DiBruno’s. 215-665-9220 x237. Cheese and beer pairing, with beer from the Foodery.
Friday, Oct. 25 - Tria Fermentation School. 215-972-7076. Which Cheddar is bettter. Local ales served with a blind-tasting of cheddars from America and the U.K.

Tom Kehoe of Yards Brewing reports he has a new location for his brewery. It’s at 901 N. Delaware Ave., in the Northern Liberties section. He’s hoping to move in the 50 bbl brewhouse he purchased from the defunct Ybor City Brewing Co. as early as next week.
This location seems well situated for deliveries and bar-hopping (2 blocks from Standard Tap). It’s not far from the planned site of the Sugar House casino.
Kehoe, you’ll recall, has split with his former partners, Bill & Nancy Barton, who will continue brewing out of Yards’ old plant in Kensington, under the name of Philadelphia Brewing Co.
Here’s the place (photo Google Street View)

Just chatted with Ryan Michaels, the ecstatic brewer at McKenzie Brew House (240 Lancaster Ave., Malvern) following his 2-medal showing at the GABF. His Saison Vautour, which won as the best Belgian-style Saison, is pouring at the brewpub as we speak. To answer the big question: It’s his own recipe, not predecessor Scott Morrison’s. Michaels also won bronze for Wee Heavy (10.5%). Both will be bottled and available in time for the Christmas holidays. This is a huge win for this talented, young brewer.
