Here it is, your first look at the fabled Philly Beer Week Hammer of Glory!
This is the tool we’ll use to hammer home the first tap of Philly Beer Week’s Opening Tap. It’ll be transported to the Comcast Center by a team of heroic marathon runners. More details to come.
(And good luck carrying this thing - looks like it weighs a ton.)

Sam Adams is rolling out its imperial series for Philly Beer Week at several tastings. I’ve already sampled them and they’re quite good (though the Imp White is a bit of a challenge).
Anyway, for the many, many readers who contact me about the world’s strongest beer, here’s a quick heads up. Utopias (27 percent ABV) will be served at a special Sam Adams dinner at the Fieldhouse Sports Bar on Wednesday March 11th.
The dinner features Boston Beer boss Jim Koch and will include a taste of the very rare and expensive Utopias. More info here.
Utopias, by the way, is fairly impossible to find in any store. But it does crop up from time to time on eBay. There’s a bottle for sale now - current bid, $255.

One of the Philly Beer Week events I’m really looking forward to is the big smoked beer and bbq festival Yards will be running on Friday, March 13th. It’s an all-afternoon event at the brewery in N.Libs.
They’re still lining up pitmen for the event, so if you’ve got the meat, contact brewer Steve Mashington, who’s the show. Drop him an email: smashington at yardsbrewing.com
Tix for this feast are just $15 - buy them at the door.
And if you’re up in the air over choosing between smoked beer at Yards and real ale at Friday the Firkinteenth at the Grey Lodge, fear not. They’re running a free shuttle between two locations.

I’ll be chatting about ways to save beer money during a recession, on Fox-29 about 7:30 a.m. tomorrow (someone send me a wakeup call, please). Just drink more and forget about the economy, I say…

I’m writing this week about the new beer that’s showing up in town for Philly Beer Week. One of them is Yuengling Bock.
I just couldn’t wait to post their logo. I want this t-shirt!

As part of its promotion of Philly Beer Week, Philly Weekly is posting videos about the local beer scene. Here’s the first one, by videographer Stephen Metzger, featuring George Hummel of Home Sweet Homebrew.

Philly Beer Week broke the 500-event mark over the weekend. But that’s the conservative number.
Some of the participants are actually running daily events - various specials featuring craft beers or beer dinners. If you count them (which I did), the total number of PBW events as of this afternoon is… 712.
FYI: Look for the official Philly Beer Week guide to hit the streets tomorrow. You’ll find it in most of the participating venues by the end of the week.

The Philly Craft Beer Festival just announced it’s sold out both sessions - 3 full weeks before it opens! A reader alerts me that panicked buyers are are posting want-ads at Craigslist in search of extra tix.
Don’t worry - there are still tix left for the week’s four other major festivals (Opening Tap, Brewer’s Plate, Real Ale Invitational and Zythos America). Head over to Philly Beer Week’s web site now.
