OK, this is possibly one of the greatest ideas in the history of mankind: a barstool on wheels. I’m guessing this began as one of those classic barroom conversations:
Norm: You know what would be great? A motorized barstool.
Cliff: Right, with a cool steering wheel…
Norm: And a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine.
Cliff: Top speed - 40 mph!
If you have to ask why, you aren’t:
- a. A beer drinker.
- b. A guy
Anyway, this is from Smoking Gun because, yep, the guy who built this fine vehicle was arrested for DUI. Big surprise.

Devil’s Den (11th and Ellsworth, South Philly) is celebrating its first anniversary a few weeks late on Wednesday (4/1). I’m not sure how owners Erin & Scott Wallace swung it, but they’ve managed to collect a fine lineup of kegs for the 7 p.m. event - so many, in fact, that the celebration will last until at least Friday. Here’s the lineup:
- Russian River Pliny the Younger
- Bell’s Oberon
- Allagash/De Proef Les Duex Basseeurs
- Unibroue Maudite
- Ommegang Rouge
- Spaten Lager
- Avery/Russian River Collaboration Not Litigation Ale
- Philly Brew Kenzinger
- Yards Philly Pale Ale
- Ballast Point Victory at Sea
- Bruery White Orchard
- Sixpoint Righteous Rye
- Schneider Aventinus
- Southern Tier Oaked Unearthly
- Founder’s Backwoods Bastard
- Dogfish Head Red & White.
- Firkins of Voodoo Wynona’s Big Brown Ale & Yards IPA.
Throughout the rest of the week, look for:
- Boulder Mojo Risin’ & Obovoid
- Hitachino Nest White Ale
- St. Feuillien Printemps
- Sinebrychoff Porter
- Sixpoint Express
- Southern Tier Cuvee 2
- Voodoo Gran Met
- Wostyntje
- Franziskaner
- Gaffel Kolsch
- Firkin of Blue Point Pale Ale (to be tapped Friday)
Oh, and all of these are $1 off. And there’s a complimentary buffet.

Just a quick note for South Jersey types: The Taproom & Grill (427 W Crystal Lake Ave.
Haddonfield) is getting into cask ale, tapping its first ever firkin tomorrow at 4 p.m. It’s River Horse Special Ale.
Seems like it would be a nice glass to enjoy while watching that Missouri/UConn warmup before ‘Nova/Pitt.
Owner Joe Kreps sends along word that he’s hoping to make weekly events with other brands. He’s already got some Weyerbacher and Capt. Lawrence on the way.

When the world champion Phillies (I just can’t say that enough!) open their season at the Citz in next week, beer lovers will find a few newbies in what is arguably the best tap lineup in the majors.
The big addition: Victory Prima Pils. The classic German-style pils from Downingtown will pour alongside two other award winners of the same style, Troegs Sunshine Pils and Sly Fox Pikeland Pils. Together, these three beers have racked up at least four GABF medals and a World Beer Cup.
What else? Red Hook ESB, which didn’t move very well, is gone. It’s replaced by Red Hook Longhammer (which I think will still get blown away by Victory HopDevil). Also new: Blue Moon (including its seasonal Honey Moon), Heineken, Dos Equis, Smitwick’s and Woodchuck cider.
They’ll join veterans, including the aforementioned HopDevil, Yards Philly Pale Ale, Philly Brewing Kenzinger, Flying Fish Extra Pale Ale, Otter Creek, Wolaver’s, Yuengling Lager, Sam Adams Boston Lager and more.
Specialty draft prices will hold the line at $6.50 (plastic bottles will jump 25 cents).
You’ll see a few more bottles, including Sam Adams seasonal, plus those Guinness draft cans.
But the one I’m really looking for is the new Bud aluminum bottle honoring the world champion Phillies. I don’t care about the beer - it’s the bottle I want.

Lost your job? Lost your401(k)? Don’t mope around - blow your severance check!
Morton’s The Steakhouse (1411 Walnut St., Center City) is serving up a special three-course dinner, with each course paired with a different variety of Chimay.
Try Chimay Triple & oysters on the half shell; Chimay Red with a New York Strip; Chimay Blue with hot chocolate cake. Decadent.
It’s a $75 fixed-price deal (available only till the end of March) that will prove that you can enjoy a big-time steak dinner without a Bordeaux.

There’s a poll floating around the Internets on which is America’s best beer city. I’m not going to link it because Internet polls are just stoopid. And also because Asheville, N.C. (!) and Portland, Oregon, are currently leading by a large margin, which I can attribute only to rampant ballot-stuffing.
Also, I kind of agree with this dude, who writes:
Plenty of false Dick Waving going on in the local Northwest Blogs in favor of Portland being the “Beer City, USA” Locals already give themselves that honor…. over and over and over again!
“The most Breweries within a single city!” Yay!!! Lets run it up the flag pole!! Throw babies up in the air and run around naked wearing only Hop vines!!
Read the whole entry - it’s one of the funnier posts I’ve stumbled across this week.

We’re looking for feedback on the week’s events. If you remember anything, kindly visit this site to fill out a very quick survey.
Do it because:
- We’ll use it to organize next year’s event.
- Your name will be entered into a drawing for free tix to next year’s Opening Tap.

Here’s a quick heads up for those who’ve made it to the final day of Philly Beer Week: A very limited number of general admission tickets will be made available this afternoon at the Zythos America Belgian beer fest at the Penn Museum.
Although the event sold out yesterday, some tickets have been set aside for last-minute beer drinkers (yes, that’s a redundancy).
The tickets are $55, an excellent deal for an event that includes food and samples of more than 80 different Belgian beers. These tix will go on sale at 3 p.m.
More details about the festival here.

That’s Nate Gefvert, winner of last night’s raucous Philly Beer Geek contest at the Manayunk Brewery. Sponsored by the Spinnerstown Hotel, Nate is a walking beer encyclopedia. He aced his exam and correctly identified the names of all three beers he sampled during a blind tasting - very impressive.
As a member of the judging panel, I gotta say I was blown away by the beer knowledge of all 5 finalists. It’s kinda scary knowing that this town is crawling with so many beer geeks (no wonder I get all those emails correcting my mistakes).
While Gefvert took home the title (and about $1000 worth of beer schwag), the most impressive performance may have belonged to runner-up Steve “The Human Growler” Hawk of the Grey Lodge Pub, who somehow convinced his girlfriend to dress up like a beer bottle so that he could propose to her on bended knee.
Yet another great, fun event during Philly Beer Week. More details here.

Penn Brewing is issuing a new series of beer labels featuring so-called “Great American Workers.” Len Caric, the Pittsburgh brewery’s president and CEO, says in a press release, “We wanted to develop a consistent identity that told a story about each one of our brands – something associated with our historical tradition and heritage of brewing.”
And what better way to illustrate age-old historic traditions than with ancient Jack Curtin? Penn Dark’s label shows the aged beer writer hammering at his, um, rod. Or perhaps that’s the Hammer of Glory.
